The discovery of an invasive aquatic plant (IAP) is bad news for any lake, which is why the Friends of Worthley Pond focuses its efforts and funding on prevention and early detection programs.
Our first line of defense against IAPs is preventing them from entering the pond by offering Courtesy Boat Inspections every weekend, Friday-Sunday, 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day. We also encourage boaters to self-inspect their boats before launching them at any location where an official inspector is not available.
No Courtesy Boat Inspector available? No worries! Check-in, Check-out is a FREE WebApp that will guide you through the self-inspection process. Please give it a try by scanning this QR code with your cell phone’s or tablet’s camera and download the app. It’s quick, easy, AND important! Please know that your efforts to control the spread of invasives is appreciated by all who live, summer, and visit Worthley Pond.
Interested in joining our team of inspectors? Friends of Worthley Pond Courtesy Boat Inspection workers are typically high school and college-aged students who get paid an hourly rate equivalent to Maine’s minimum wage. An inspector’s job is easy and does not require extensive training. You simply inspect each boat, trailer and/or fishing equipment, looking for any plant fragments. If found, put them in plastic bags for identification by one of our experts. You also educate boaters about inspecting their own boats and why it is so important. FMI, please contact Jim Denholm or Sherry Barstow.
